Throw Pillow Covers
My latest project is throw pillow covers. I get tired easily of home decor items, so when I get bored with something, I just make something new to cover it. In this case it is the throw pillows on my bed.
So I had some leftover fabric and a really great fat quarter (the greens and browns in the picture) and decided I would use those to make some pillow covers. My pillows are 16 x 16, so I cut out some fabric squares that measured 17 x 17 for the fronts and 17 x 20 for the backs. I had a litte left out of my fat quarter, so I used that as trim on my pillows as well.
So first you want to sew the trim pieces onto the front of the pillow covers, I just sewed them straight across with a simple stitch.
(I also made the trim 17 inches in length.)
Next, you need to sew the hem on the backs of the pillows. You are making an envelope closure on the back, so the flaps will just overlap each other (you need 2 pieces for the back (17 x 19 each). Now just fold over the ends and hem them in place - so you have a nice finished look on the back.
Once you have both sides hemmed, flip the front of the pillow cover so the right side (with the trim) is looking at you, now lay down the 2 back pieces layered on top of each other to line up with the front. Make sure all right sides are facing each other (you will turn the pillow cover right side out after you sew it all together). Pin all the edges together, and sew all 4 sides together. When done, turn it inside out, finger press the seams, and make sure all corners are poked out.
Insert your pillow and you are done!!
What a great way to re-do the look of a room for oh so cheap!
It’s also eco-friendly because you are reusing those pillows instead of buying new!
Up next, pillow shams…….
